Fire Damaged Cup & Saucer 3 Print
£45.00 – £90.00
Description
“In November 2023 my parents’ house was catastrophically damaged by fire. So much was lost. The trauma of this event has inspired a body of work around the theme of loss and resurrection. I’ve titled this collection “”From the Ashes”” after the song from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang “”From the ashes of disaster grow the roses of success””.
In my parents’ hallway there used to stand an antique bureau inherited from my grandparents. This was sadly in the hottest, most fierce part of the fire, and when we were allowed in by the fire officer, all that appeared to remain was charcoal and ashes. In spite of the devastation i retrieved the blackened cups and saucers from the burnt out unit, and cleaned these up as best as i could. These cups and saucers belonged to my grandparents, and possibly my great grandparents before them, and we think they date from the 1840s. Each cup and saucer has a different burn pattern, and you get glimpses of the original pattern in different places and shapes, a bit like the finger prints of the fire. “
